The Security Breach of MyFitnessPal
It was reported on March 29, 2018 that more than 150 million users’ data of a popular fitness app called MyFitnessPal had been hacked. Users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords were stolen. After the company noticed that an unauthorized person had accessed the data on February, they immediately started to notify their users through in-app messaging and emails. The company then urged the users to change their passwords immediately. Unfortunately, the identity of the hacker/s, who stole the data of millions of users is still unknown.
Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, then claimed that their users’ financial information were not affected by the breach in any way. The damage of the data breach is considered moderate since the company does not require any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Right now, the company is trying to find out how the hackers were able to get into their system without being noticed.
And though having your dietary and fitness progress stolen may not look like a big deal, it still has some power when you consider the bigger picture. For example, the app has the ability to collect precise performance and the location data of its users. This means that if someone else has the ability to access a user’s account, then they also possess the ability to track the user’s whereabouts and know how fast the user is going. Whoever holds the user’s data may then be able to track them down, putting the users in potential danger.
Getting Your Data Secured
This situation is a very important reminder for everyone that in this modern age of technology, any personal data can be easily hacked into. In order to secure their private data, listed below are some of the things that individuals can do in order to secure their own private data.
1. Setting Strong Passwords
While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though it is a very small detail, hackers may still end up having a hard time in cracking your password if you set it into a difficult one, thus protecting your account until the issue is fixed.
2. Reading Through the Terms and Services Conditions
While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is very important that the users are aware of the capabilities of the app itself.
While breaches like these are becoming common today and companies have the ability to protect their users, it is still important that the users take precautionary measures in protecting their private information.
